Last Sunday evening at The Forge in Joliet, just outside of Chicago Illinois, Sons of Apollo came together for one amazing night. The band, an American-progressive-metal-super-group comprised of veteran musicians joined forces in 2017 as drummer, Mike Portnoy and keyboardist Derek Sherinian from ex-Dream Theater with guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (ex-Guns N’ Roses), bassist Billy Sheehan (who you may know from Mr. Big, David Lee Roth and The Winery Dogs) and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto who performed with Journey in 2006-07, Rising Force, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and many more.
The night began with their track “God of The Sun” which blended a middle-Eastern vibe with progressive rock sounds and alluring melodies. Sheehan showcased immeasurable talent with his double-necked bass guitar, a level only matched by the fellow musicians on stage. The evening continued on with a set of original tracks as well as covers from Van Halen, Queen, Dream Theater and more, leading up to an encore filled with the band sharing shots to a rendition of “And the Cradle Will Rock” that could have easily been mistaken as being performed by Eddie Van Halen himself.
