Canadian hardcore band Counterparts recently released their fifth full-length album, You’re Not You Anymore. Fans have waited two years since the release of Tragedy Will Not Find Us for this album and it does not disappoint. Released via Pure Noise Records, the band’s latest album features a heavy, melodic hardcore sound.
Vocalist Brendan Murphy states; “YNYA is the perfect blend of every record we’ve released prior. I feel like we did a great job at capturing the best parts of Counterparts. Not to sound like a broken record, but these are definitely the coolest songs we’ve ever written. I really do hope you enjoy it. If not, I’m sorry and I guess we’ll try harder next time.”
The album starts off with an unexpected intro. The 38-second track, “Walk Away Slowly,” is a rhythmic guitar solo setting the tone for the rest of the album. Its soothing tones lead right into the next track “Bouquet,” a fast-paced sound we recognize from previous Counterparts albums. Tracks such as “Arms Like Teeth” and “Swim Beneath My Skin” feature heavy and unexpected breakdowns while songs like “Haunt Me” and “Fragile Limbs” represent the more melodic side of the album. Ending with “You’re Not You Anymore,” the final track of the album best displays the evolution of Counterparts’ music over the past 10 years.
Overall, this is a unique and exciting album in the melodic hardcore genre and just may be Counterparts best album to date.
